Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth
Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth (CCAY) supports culturally-focused, community-based, youth-led activities that connect Aboriginal youth with culture, build self-confidence and self-esteem. CCAY also fosters motivation to make positive life choices and to participate in Canadian Society. CCAY programs, services and activities are structured in a manner that empowers Aboriginal youth to address the challenges they face and determine their own future with a sense of pride in a safe and culturally relevant environment.
CCAY’s objective is to enable participation of urban Aboriginal youth in the economy by providing funding to support projects that:
Community Wellness Programs
To improve the quality of life of people in the Yellowknife area by delivering a variety of community-based programs addressing the complex issues associated with addictions. These programs will include education, awareness, prevention, one-to-one counselling, referrals to treatment centres and aftercare.
Education, Employment and Culture
Adult Education Program
This program provides academic upgrading to adult Aboriginal students. This program includes students with very low literacy skills to students who are preparing to write their GEDs. The Adult Educator also provides one to one tutelage and our program is unique in that it offers a "Native Studies" component. Other components include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Computers. This class has a maximum of thirteen (13) students and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays from September through June of each year.
Employment
This program assists clients who are in need of help in seeking employment, resume writing and development, preparation of cover letters, on-line applications and information on education and apprenticeship opportunities. The office also posts all job opportunities on a bulletin board for clients to view.

Culture
The Tree of Peace Friendship Centre sponsors an annual Talent Show and Dance each March in conjunction with the annual Long John Jamboree.. This Talent Show is very popular and is usually sold out in days of the tickets going on sale. Categories include singing, fiddling and jigging. Due to the large amount of people in attendance, this function is held outside of the Centre and attendance is limited to 353 people.

- engage urban Aboriginal youth and other stakeholders in planning, development and delivery of programs and services to reduce barriers to urban Aboriginal youth participation in the economy.
- support urban Aboriginal youth in reducing barriers to their participation in the economy.
- focus on cultural and language development, preservation and revitalization in relation to the above mentioned initatives and projects.
- assist urban Aborginal youth in realizing their leadership potential through volunteer and social enterprise activities.

- Cribbage Tournaments (Cribbage tournaments are held every Saturday during the year and are open to everyone. There is an entry fee which is used towards the prizes in the tournament.)
